The Everlane Guide
Everlane has become one of my favorite brands to shop and be inspired by. If you've been following along with @thegoodwearblog for some time, then you've probably noticed.
The Everlane Guide is designed to help you sort through the brand's high-quality styles, recommend and review sizing tips as well as provide personal opinions on products I love. You'll find some details on where to find great educational media and promotions to help get to know Everlane's efforts in the ethical fashion industry. Although not perfect as a large-producing company of their product and textiles, Everlane continues to go beyond what we typically see of large retailers and for that, I commend them.
A great example on reshaping the industry is show in the graphic below. These are located at the bottom of every product page to help you get to know why a product costs the amount it does. A lot goes into producing a garment and accessory so this content is extremely helpful to help us as the customer, know where our money goes. Most companies don't have the same effort towards transparency and commitment in sharing how and why something costs the amount it does.
tips on purchasing—
Determine what product category you are looking to purchase and explore the styles offered
Check out Choose What You Pay under the 'Featured' column in the Women and Men tabs. Here you'll find loved Everlane styles that were over produced in quantities (aka they did not sell completely through). You'll have the option to choose what price to pay at either full or discounted. You'll also see what your money will go towards with each price option available - staffing, product cost, transportation, etc.
If you're worried about returns, check out their detailed size sheet under each product. See advice and customer reviews on each product page on return experience and sizing recommendations - they are usually extremely helpful. When in doubt, you can always email customer service for any product advice.
When you purchase 2 or more items, shipping is automatically free. If you're on a budget and want the free shipping, there are many accessories or cotton products that you can purchase under $30.00.
If you're still skeptical of ordering, try out their basics tees first - where Everlane first got their start is perfecting the basic tee. See below on fit and styles.
tips on sizing—
BASICS
From my experience, Everlane basics like tees, v-necks, tanks and long sleeves fit very true to size as the fabric is often a lighter weight with some stretch or shape that compliments many silhouettes. Their tee basics are perfect to be worn as individual items or layered with sweaters, jackets and dresses. I own a tank, vneck and long sleeve with all 3 fitting true to size. Extra tip: Always check fabric content while searching basics to ensure its the fabric weight or comfort you’re looking for!
If you want a looser fit, size up for basics.
BLOUSES
In the few blouses I have tried, they seem to fit slightly larger and boxier than a normal size range. I would recommend sizing down, especially if you're on the shorter side like me. Most of the silk blouses are loose and comfortable — the cotton blouses and button downs range from stiffer shape to form fitting depending on the silhouette. Therefore if you don’t know your typical Everlane size, it’s always possible to order in different sizes depending on your preference and sending back the one that does not fit (or if you’re in these cities, you can always visit their stores in San Francisco, New York and L.A.). All in all, the fabric is extremely high quality and will wear well over time through wear and washes.
SWEATERS
These styles fit true to size and typically can be sized down depending on your fit preference. I've heard many different opinions on preference for fall and winter sweaters — whether you like layering with other pieces or a more form fitting look. The sweaters are extremely high quality and are offered in a range of fabrics, from cashmere to cotton. Several sweaters Everlane sells will be longer in length and others will be boxier or cropped style - see product details and photos for more descriptions per style.
DRESSES / JUMPSUITS
Everlane sells a variety of dresses and jumpsuits that range in fit depending on fabric. height and silhouette preference. I've been able to try on several of their dresses and like the options available - especially for an assortment that can be worn for different occasions. I will I will typically be true to size for this category or size down to avoid any boxiness (if dress is described in this way). As for jumpsuits, I have tried the Linen Jumpsuit and the Modern Utility Jumpsuit and both are high quality, comfortable fabrics — for petite / shorter body types, I’d recommend sizing down for these. These categories will always be a a product that will be trial and error for each customer so be sure to check out their videos on each product page to see movement, length, etc.
DENIM
Everlane has an array of denim style and fit choices for tall, average and petite heights and they continue to product highly favored styles for quality, style and fit. I have owned both their Mid-Rise Skinny Jean in size 26 and their Kick Crop style in size 25 and they both fit comfortably but over time, I decided to resell my Mid-Rise Skinny Jean in the size 26 because the denim would loosen throughout the day. From other product reviews, many customers recommend sizing down on their boyfriend fit as well.
One other note if you are skeptical of ordering denim online, all model measurements and seen sizes are listed with a "See how it fits on other sizes" drop down to find a model similar to you.
PANTS
The pants I've been able to try on fit slightly big and therefore, I have sized down on these purchases to ensure a form fitting and more formal look to wear to work and events. Although I have not tried on all of their pant styles, the fabric and silhouettes they sell are very comfortable and wear well for multiple season I’ve been able to try their Wide Leg Pant, their Straight Leg Pant and their new Corduroy style — I’ve sized down on all of them and they fit well, although the corduroy fit a bit larger in the waist and pant openings.
SHOES
I've been able to try on a few styles of Everlane's shoes including their __ sneaker, their Boss Boot, __ , __. The shoes are designed and crafted beautifully with materials like Italian leather, suede, etc. Many of the shoes can be considered investment pieces, but seem to be ones that will last for many seasons — my shoe additions are fairly recent but continue to wear well over time. And lastly, from my try on experience all shoes fit true to size on my feet although there are reviews, that some of the shoes fit narrow and therefore require you to size up. My recommendation is to read a few comments and make that judgement for yourself and how your shoe size typically runs!
UNDERWEAR
I was able to try out Everlane’s underwear line when it was released and it has easily become some of my favorite styles. The bras and underwear offered are extremely comfortable, supportive and breathable fabrics — all fitting true to size!
returns—
It's normal, when shopping online, to worry about reliable sizing, fit, and look. I've heard from many people that they're apprehensive about ordering from Everlane because of these factors or that they just won't like the item. From experience, the risk is worth it - if you don't love a product, their returns process is extremely painless. Personally, I've ordered several items that have not fit correctly. When this happens, the company provides 2 options - to either return it for a shipping cost (about $6.95 taken from the original paid price) or return it as an exchange and they provide a free ship label. For the first few returns, I paid the return shipping price. But now, I will choose to send the item back for credit as I know I'll continue purchasing other needed product or new releases.
As for their customer service... they’re amazing! You will receive a response in under an hour and their team is always willing to help with anything you may need. In one of my first orders with the company, I ordered a sweater that came with a tear in the material. Once I told the team what happened, they created a return label for me and automatically reordered a new sweater to ship without even having to ask. Painless process.
loved items—
The Cotton V - in True Black
One of my first tee purchases from Everlane, this core staple v-neck is the perfect basic that is durable in material and color when withstanding wears and washes. The fabric and stretch can be tucked in or tied in a knot over a dress + skirt. With many color options, these can be added to your minimal wardrobe or basic everyday wear.
The Wide Leg Crop Pant - in Navy
My favorite Everlane product and purchase - I’ve owned these for several years and they are still in good condition. The pants go with everything and they continue to be a staple in my wardrobe with a high waisted fit that sits snug but stretches out (in a good way) with movement throughout the day. These pants can be dressed up or down with shoes, accessories and tops. I'd recommend ordering true to size or size down for a snugger fit around the waist and bottom.
The Pima Stretch Long Sleeve - in White
I wore this long sleeve with many different styles - although over the years it gets a little worn, it’s a perfect simple top to be worn on it's own or underneath items like sweaters, cardigans and jackets because of it's fitted style. The fabric is thin, lightweight and comfortable to wear. Color tip : the white style is slightly see through.
The Cashmere Crew - in Cerulean
My first cashmere style in my wardrobe, this crew cut sweater is a great basic that will go with styles that already own for the fall and winter seasons. The style is soft, well-structured and fits true to size — I highly recommend trying a cashmere style from Everlane for it’s affordability and comfort.
The Boss Boot - in Black / White Snake
I’d been eyeing the Boss Boot style for over a year and finally added a pair to my wardrobe. The shoe silhouette, 2 inch block heel and pointed toe are versatile for occasions and comfortable — the snake pattern just adds a little pop! The boot is offered in 5 color ways and made from Italian leather. I recommend this shoe for someone looking for a boot to dress up or down that will be a timeless style for your shoe wear. Boot runs true to size.
The Kick Crop Jean - in Black and Dark Blue Wash
I have 2 pairs of the Kick Crop Jean that I purchased off of Poshmark. Both of these styles fit extremely well, are comfortable and durable. With the kick-flare and raw hem are great details and allow the denim to be worn with many different shoe styles for a variety of occasions — I always get compliments on these!
The Mid-Rise Skinny Jean - in Mid Blue
Everlane's line of denim is high quality, ethically made, durable and affordable. The mid-rise style fits normally above the hips for a flattering silhouette with the pant tapering right above at or above the ankle depending on your height. And the color chosen for each denim wash is designed to fade naturally. I am a fan of the quality of the denim, but would size down for my next pair as they do stretch out throughout the day.
The Cotton Collarless Belted Shirt Dress - in Navy
Available in several colors, this dress is an awesome option for simple wear for any season. The cotton fabric is a breathable, medium weight that sits slightly stiff on the body for a look that can transcend from work to date nights. I love the button down, shape of the sleeves and belted tie - it leaves a vibe of a fitted kimono style that is extremely comfy and easy to wear!
The Recashmere Button Mockneck - in White
One of my current favorite styles from the brand comes from their newly released Recashmere collection. This release is an assortment of cashmere styles made from recycled materials to help reduce the carbon footprint that comes with sweater production. The style is soft, affordable, versatile and brings a casual vibe to a typically formal material — runs true to size!
The Linen Relaxed Shirt - in Lavender
Not typically a style I would’ve thought to choose, I was gifted the linen relaxed shirt in lavender and it has become a favorite for comfort and workwear. The structure is well produced, the color is fun, and fabric extremely breathable. Although the color is no longer being offered for fall, it seems like linen styles will continue to be staples for the brand! Any “relaxed” styles will run larger so choose sizing based on desired fit.
The Modern Utility Jumpsuit - in Dark Indigo
The brand continues to keep up with timeless trends that follow both function, comfort and style. I was gifted this jumpsuit and was pleased by the color and structure. The jumpsuit is a bit thinner than I expected but is designed to be a more light weight than a typical vintage utility jumpsuit — great to wear for work and on-the-go. The fit was slightly bigger than expected and therefore will have to get tailored — I recommend sizing down!
